Master's Degree (Year 2) in “Intellectual Property and New Technologies Law”

Directed by Jean-Michel Bruguière
Grenoble Alpes University

The Master 2 program in “Intellectual Property and New Technologies Law,” which I have the pleasure of directing today, is more than forty years old.

Originally known as the “DESS in Intellectual Property, Industrial Agreements, and New Technology Law” (itself an evolution of a renowned DEA specializing in industrial property), this degree program was created by Marie Angèle Pérot-Morel*, Research Director at the CNRS, and has been successively directed by Professors Jean-Louis Goutal, Christian Le Stanc, Pascale Tréfigny, and myself (since 2008).

This renowned master’s program, located in a city “where the proportion of jobs in research and development is the highest in France and where the number of patents filed has reached a record high of 8.3 per 10,000residents”1, trains lawyers, corporate and public-sector legal professionals—both French and foreign—as well as high-level intellectual property attorneys.

It is supported by an intellectual property research center, CUERPI, formerly a research team at the CNRS (now affiliated with the CRJ), which is no less renowned and has been organizing an annual conference for many years that attracts a large number of participants in France.

* In memoriam
. 1 B. Madeline, “Why Grenoble Is (For Now) the Tech Champion…,” Le Monde, March 8, 2024

This Master 2 program has always relied on a team of highly qualified faculty members, bringing together academics and practitioners (lawyers, intellectual property consultants, in-house counsel, etc.) specializing in intellectual property law and new technologies from a wide range of backgrounds.

Lawyers at corporate law firms thus work alongside legal counsel from major fashion houses and promising small startups, as well as the top intellectual property attorneys.

The speakers are from Grenoble, Paris, and Lyon… but also from Switzerland, Belgium, Scotland, and the United States.
